The Distance Project's 2014 single "The Factory" was originally written by bassist Bud Long as a jazz jam titled "Smooth" and was slowly was transformed into a longer piece by him and the band. The beginning of the track is the original piece.

This design takes flight.
We’ll surpass our last’s shortcomings. Scrap the last creation – No distractions!
We’ll have fun with this one.

Refire the chemic forge.
Accelerate the pressure, And bring your anatomic drawings.

Start with the guide. Hive mind we’ll intertwine,
and bypass that tendency towards adolescent engineering.

Find a new way to implement intuition (in which we have previously failed).
Conflicting inventions of their self-destruction… So boring. Suffocating lack of structure!
We might as well watch the ant hills. At least they don’t let the wind sweep them away.

Cast the molds and pump life into our creation.
Let’s get creative and test our vision – This will outlive us.
Cast the molds and pump life into our creation.

Mind the assembly line, nerves and sinews intertwine.
Bring this species to life. We have a schedule to meet.
They’ll wake where we put the last ones. Any bets on how fast they’ll progress?
How about our current residents? Who bets how they interact?

We’ll leave that part to them.

Do you think they’ll discover us this time out?
Find the clues that point our way?
Sit ringside, and let’s enjoy the show.
